Alphabet is the parent company of Google. It is the industry leader in search advertising and also a leading player in the cloud industry. In 2022, Alphabet spent $39.5 billion on research and development, which was around $8 billion higher compared to the prior year.

In 2021, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, spent $31.6 billion on research and development, compared to $27.6 billion in 2020. The company incurred total costs and expenses worth $178.9 billion in 2021. Alphabet has experienced a solid growth in its total net revenues in 2021. The company broke all its previous records and its revenues surged past $250 billion for the first time in its history.

In 2019, Alphabet, the parent company of Google spent $26 billion on research and development compared to $21.4 billion in 2018. Within two years, the research and development expenses of the search giant have grown by more than $9 billion.

Research and development costs of Alphabet (Parent company of Google) increased to $21.42 Billions in 2018 compared to $16.63 Billions in 2017.

It invests in Research and development for making improvements to the existing products and services as well as development of new products and services. Its R&D expenses in 2017 increased by 2677 million dollars from 2017. Its investment in R&D in 2017 was 16,625 Million dollars or 16.6 Billion dollars. the brand is quite aggressive in terms of research and development and its R&D expenses have grown very fast during the last five years. they have more than doubled in this period.  Its R&D expenses mainly include the compensation expenses of R&D employees and facilities related expenses as well as depreciation and equipment related expenses.

In the first quarter of 2018, Alphabet spent 5,039 million dollars on research and development which was much higher than what it spent last year during the same period. Last year in the first quarter, it had spent 3,942 million dollars on R&D.
