Number of Murders Committed by Juvenile Offenders in United States 1980-2016
In 2016, known juvenile offenders were involved in around 730 murders in United States. This represents about 7% of all known murder offenders. Estimated number of murders involving a juvenile offender fell 65% between 1994 and 2003. This was the lowest since 1980.
In the 1980s around 25% of the murders in which a juvenile offender was involved also involved an adult offender. The proportion of such cases involving both juvenile and adult offenders was 31% in the 1990s. During the last 10 years, this proportion has grown to average 41%.
Between 1980 and 2016, homicide offending increased with the age of the juvenile offenders. 79% of the juvenile offenders having committed homicides were 16 or 17 years of age. Only 9% were under age 15 years of age.
